Heavy drinking and binge drinking raise blood pressure and damage the heart, increasing the risk of serious alcohol-related problems, such as heart attack or stroke.

Alcohol-related encephalopathy, which is a brain disease, is also a common condition for alcoholics.

Alcohol also damages the digestive system and injures the tissues of the GI tract and making it harder for the intestines to absorb nutrients. Heavy alcohol use also puts people at higher risk for hemorrhoids and ulcers.

Alcohol can cause the heart to beat abnormally. It also damages the heart’s ability to pump blood into the rest of the body.

Another of the long term effects of alcohol on the body is an increase in the risk of various cancers. They include oral cancers, esophageal cancer and cancers of the throat, breast, and liver.

Alcohol abuse also damages the immune system.  Alcohol can also cause pancreatitis, hypoglycemia, and diabetes.

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is another health problem caused by a pregnant mother drinking alcohol. It is characterized by both physical abnormalities, issues with the central nervous system, and developmental problems.
